Пишет sir Arthur:The Booby-traps of English Spelling
Думаю и надеюсь, что нижеследующее стихотворение поможет многим преодолеть некоторые подводные камни в английском.
I think you all already know
Of tough and bough and cough and dough,
Some may be baffled, but not you
By hiccough, thorough, tough and through.
Well done! And now you wish, perhaps,
To learn of less familiar traps?
Beware of heard, a dreadful word
That looks like beard and sounds like bird,
And bread; it's said like bed, not bead -
Misleading, isn't it, indeed!
Watch out for meat and great and threat -
They rhyme with suite and straight and debt.
A moth is not a moth in mother,
Nor both in bother or in brother.
And here is not a match for there,
Nor dear and fear for bear and pear.
And do and go and said and paid.
And close and come and Rome and some.
Just wait! The list has not been made.
A dreadful language? Every bit! So what's the use of learning it?
No learner would emerge alive!
Don't be afraid! You will survive.
I spoke it at the age of five!
